YOUR MMA

Let’s get straight to the point. Padding records is not an MMA phenomenon (it’s exponentially worse in boxing), nor is it a UK phenomenon, but it is an issue that has been raising its head, even moreso over the past couple of years.

This food for thought for this blog was actually a tweet by Cage Warriors matchmaker Ian Dean, who said:

“Gonzaga defeats the 13-0-1 Edinaldo Oliveira. UK fighters take note, protected records don’t help you in the big show.”

This week’s blog will be on the issue that has gripped the Scottish MMA community this week- the negative comments from Sandra White MSP against ‘cagefighting’, and Joanne Calderwood’s upcoming fight in particular.

For those unaware, I’ll outline the context. World class Muay Thai fighter Joanne Calderwood is making her professional MMA debut at On Top 4 on February 25th at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow. It’s the first female MMA bout in Scotland, so naturally the press are very interested.

I’m going to start this blog off on a positive note by looking at the bright future that lies ahead for Scottish MMA.

We have two promotions – On Top and SFC – producing one top quality event after another, pushing each other to provide a better product each time. Every event they hold seems to raise the bar to another level on every front. Fight cards are starting to compete with the best in the UK, entertainment value and attendance is rising with each event they hold, and they’re gaining an increasing amount of respect at UK and European level.

My last fight was on OMMAC 12 on the 12th November against Shay Walsh. Since then a lot has happened and I feel like that competition was a million miles away. I told myself after my fight in November that I would take some time to chill out and eat copious amounts of Terry’s chocolate oranges, which were only £1.35 in Morrison’s during the Christmas period.

Top European bantamweight James Doolan of the Dinky Ninjas joins the YourMMA.tv blogging team, following on from his popular, long-running blog at MMA Hit Pit. He starts us off with a great insight into how you should be training, and how to spot those gyms not up to the task.

I’m not really in to New Year’s resolutions as I try not to count time in years, I prefer days, like a recovering alcoholic I take life one day at a time. With that being said, it is that time of year again when the New Year’s resolutions brigade get on the fitness bandwagon and, with MMA being all the rage these days, expect class numbers at gyms across the country to swell before inevitably settling back to normal right in time for Easter.

There’s really not that much interesting to say about the journey from Manchester to Recife, apart from the laughable thought of a 6’10″ Dave being able to squeeze into a regular seat.

So let’s start this blog off by saying Jay Furness, you absolute warrior. The upmost respect for you my friend, raising the bar in your game fighting a tough opponent in his back yard and getting FOTN. Hat off to you my man, if only more UK fighters had the same attitude as you. If only.

Here’s my last blog of 2011 for you. To be honest I don’t even know if people are reading the blogs, like them or hate them, but I committed to Jay on a blog so I’ll write them anyway.

Picture the almost bemused look on my face as I stood with the phone to my ear, on the blower to Dave Keeley as he casually poses the question to me in his lovely Rotherham tones.

“Hey up Jay, do you fancy a fight in Brazil?”

A little gap in my blog for you guys and girls recently, my apologies.

Unfortunately for me I’ve been stuck in an airport or on a plane for the past month. Inbetween signing deals to provide more jobs within the industry of MMA and reading long-winded, boring legal contracts, I didn’t have much time to write a blog.

I arrived in Australia for the opening of my new gym here in Perth. December 10th is the grand opening BBQ and beers, and yet another 5/10 more full time jobs created for MMA. I’m currently dealing with jet lag like I’ve not felt before, London to Springfield back to London to Australia in 7 days is a bit much.

Anyway enough on me, what about sponsorship in MMA?
