Training some of Europe’s top fighters and being a former competitor himself, Bri gives some insights on what it’s like inside the trenches of a successful MMA fight team.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I don’t want to list just the negatives about coaching. Let me be clear, the positives by far outweigh them or I wouldn’t do it. The problem with coaching though is the negatives shape much of what I do as a coach, and the reasons why I often make the decisions I take.

Now I wish coaching was all about having fun and joking around but, in all honesty, when it comes to coaching in the gym and coaching fighters for competition there is a massive difference. (more…)

Given that it is a huge part of any brand these days, it interests me to know the hows, whys, dos and don’ts of the pretty broad playing field of social media. Marketing your brand (in my case, Your MMA) on these mediums can bring great results, and there is no better feedback than from the fans directly. It’s taken over many conventional ways of drawing attention, hits, and all that good stuff to what you’re doing.

So, when I saw this blog by Ingrained Media this morning entitled ‘As Real As It Gets, Except on Twitter’, it certainly piqued my interest. The blog describes many of the UFC’s biggest hitters, and their percentage of ‘fake’, ‘inactive’ and ‘active’ followers. (more…)

Being a team mate, what does it mean? (more…)

Hello to all the YourMMA.tv readers out there that have been following my blog. First I would like to take a minute to thank you for giving interest in my career and reading about my life as a fighter. So, this is it everyone, the last and final week of training. Every fighter knows that this is the hardest week of the whole training camp. My body has been pushed to its limits for the past eight weeks, my mind has been racing with ideas on how the fight is going to play out and my stomach has shrunk to probably the size of an apple.

Training during this week is tough because in my mind I feel that I am ready for the fight already. I wish that I could just get in the cage and fight today, that’s how ready I feel. All the preparation has been done and I am in the best shape that I can be in for this featherweight title fight. I have been talking about how this fight is the only thing on my mind and that when I sleep I even dream about the fight.

Well that has all changed. Yes, the fight is still the main focus of my life right now but I have a big announcement to make that will change my life forever. I know that this will be better than winning any world title but we will get to that later. (more…)

I’m back everyone! I hope you guys missed me. So we are a little more than two weeks out from the most important fight of my life and I cannot be more anxious for that day to come already. Training has been going great and I feel that I am getting sharper and sharper.

The last time I wrote I was just getting back from a trip to Roufus Sports where I trained and learned from some high level coaches and fighters like Ben Askren, Anthony Pettis and Duke Roufus himself. I brought a lot of what I learned back to my training camp here in Florida and I feel that it has taken my game to a whole new level. There will be many new exciting techniques that I will be show casing in my fight. (more…)

“If people are not laughing at your goals then they are not big enough.”

I am Jim “The Beast” Alers, number one contender for the Cage Warriors featherweight title. I earned this status by winning my last two Cage Warriors fights, finishing two very tough opponents; one by submission and one by TKO. So now I am now 9-1 and fighting for the title on April 13th in Glasgow, Scotland. (more…)

So I’m a couple of days late getting this blog out because I’ve just completed the penultimate week of fight camp for Cage Warriors 52 in London on 9th March.

Mason vs InmanMason vs Inman

In my opinion the penultimate week is probably the toughest week of fight camp. Not only are you training intensely and getting your last sparring rounds in, you are also starting to really restrict what you eat and really worrying about making weight. Add to that the stress of interview commitments, ticket sales (and rounding up all the ticket money), a full-time day job, daily house work and girlfriend duties, you can probably imagine how foul a mood I was in by the weekend! OK, so I started off the week on a big high after attending the UFC last Saturday night at Wembley. I tagged along with the Bigslow and the Maguire brothers, who’d been given ringside seats which were fantastic. I couldn’t help but feel a bit nostalgic about the old Cage Rage days when the show was at its height at Wembley a few years back.

If I’m honest the show wasn’t all that different and was maybe a bit less exciting at some points. I’ve not been to many events that can beat the atmosphere that was in that stadium when Rob Broughton turned the tide after a horrendous beating for 3 rounds and went on to put away James Thompson in devastating fashion at an old Cage Rage event (more…)

As a busy writer you expect to receive the odd nonsensical press release from time to time and, speaking frankly, my days are often brightened by the sheer weight of superlatives contained in these communications.

Today however, I was greeted by a PR e-mail that amazed even myself regarding the next BAMMA event. The card that would have/should have/could have happened a few months back had been announced for September and a new partnership with Channel 5’s sister station 5* had also now been made official. For the last 6 years I have trained my body far too hard at times with little rest.

After pulling out on very late notice of MMA Attack 2, which would have been a highlight in my MMA career, I’ve taken a few weeks out of training and spent time looking at how I can change my training schedule and routines in order to keep in the best condition possible whilst remaining relatively injury free.

I have been training so hard without a break for a long time, very rarely taking a day off and always training pretty hard. Competing at a high level of MMA you need to train so many different disciplines as well as different aspects of conditioning it is hard not to overtrain. (more…)
