Cage Warriors 40 Event Report by Matt Freeman

In its second show at the HMV Forum in Kentish Town, London, Cage Warriors 40 headlined with an important clash between two of the world’s top female fighters. Having made the move down to 125lb, Roxy Modafferi took on the highly respected Brit Rosi Sexton in a thrilling three round affair. With both fighters opening the match throwing heavy leather with little pause, the bout quickly became a case of striking and clinch work against the cage.

Both women are well versed ground fighters and each fought bitterly to score the takedowns and secure dominant position. In the second, Sexton found her groove and began making the takedowns, but Modafferi was quick to threaten with submissions from her back.

Going into the third it seemed that it was an even affair. Sensing her superiority with BJJ, Modafferi resorted to pulling guard, almost sinking in a triangle at the last moment. However, Sexton’s pace and takedowns obviously had the right influence with the judges as she took the unanimous decision and the win to keep her momentum going, and hand the American Modefferi her second loss in a row.

Defending his bantamweight title, Paul McVeigh earned an excellent second round TKO over his German challenger Andreas Bernhard. After trading shots early in the first, McVeigh began to up the pressure on the Judoka from Germany, showing some crisp striking and his superior strength. Going into the second Bernhard clearly wanted to take the fight to the mat but the champion scored his own takedown, moving easily into mount and raining down a flurry of blows that forced the stoppage three minutes in and, once again, proving the Scottish based fighter’s top ranking in the UK.

Fellow Dinky Ninja and teammate to McVeigh, Graham Turner, put in a brutal performance against Antanas Jazbutis in the lightweight division to earn the decision victory with style. Though Jazbutis never capitulated, Turner continued to batter his opponent, finishing the fight in mount and dropping big punches to earn the win.

TUF contender Joe Duffy took on Tom Maguire, completely manhandling his opponent from the beginning. After shipping a big combination, Maguire had no answer as Duffy scored the takedown and transitioned to mount with frightening ease. Though Maguire scrambled as best he could, defending chokes and punches, Duffy had too much as he sank in a triangle from top mount to finish the fight in the first round.

Middleweights Brett Sizeland and Tony Machado, both undefeated at 3-0, engaged in a thunderous but short lived affair that was all action. Machado knocked down Sizeland early on but the MMA Clinic trained fighter recovered quickly. However, Machado smelt blood and began to pour on the pressure, smashing his opponent with big punches before landing a some thudding knees and elbows that caused the ref to step in and halt the bout after just two minutes.

Ashleigh Grimshaw put in a thorough performance against Ismael Padavia in the featherweight division, landing big punches and scoring big takedowns. Padavia employed the rubber guard to lock down Grimshaw when the action hit the mat, defending well enough to last the distance but ultimately losing the judges’ decision.

In other action, Arni Isaksson took on Welshman Kevin Reed in an excellent ground battle that saw the Icelander win with a beautiful head and arm triangle in the second.

Brad Wheeler showed his all round skills with a solid win over Hayden Critchfield via Rear Naked Choke whilst Ian Entwistle silenced the home crowd fans, submitting Pat Vickers with a standing guillotine in just 27 seconds.

Aaron Thomas looked amazing as he threw Charlie Leary at will, finally securing the armbar in the second round whilst MMA Clinic’s Mark Fry dominated Paul Kingdon on the mat to earn the TKO victory.
