Biography
Lyoto Machida is a Japanese-Brazilian MMA fighter based out of the Black House gym along with the Nogueira brothers and Anderson Silva.
He is known for his elusive footwork and unorthodox striking which is a credit to his Karate background; formed by his lifelong learning in the art as his father was a Shotokan Karate master.
Machida is now well rounded, cross training in Muay Thai, BJJ and wrestling, but he credits his success to Machida Karate.
Machida impressed early in his career by beating more experienced opponents like Stephan Bonnar and Rich Franklin before taking a decision over BJ Penn. Along with his other victories, they earned Machida a place in the UFC where he went on a tear and defeated the likes of Vernon White, Sokoudjou, Tito Ortiz and Thiago Silva. This earned him the title shot and he knocked out Rashad Evans to take the crown.
