Interview

Brian ‘Hissy’ Hyslop is set to fight Mark Platts in a high-level flyweight clash at On Top 4 on February 25 at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland.

We caught up with ‘Hissy’ to talk about his recent win at BAMMA 8, his thoughts on Mark Platts, and what he’s looking to do in 2012.

Your MMA: Your last fight was a win at BAMMA 8 over Ian Malone. What was the experience like fighting at BAMMA, and how happy were you with your performance?

“I loved fighting on such a big show. The organization, the travelling down to Nottingham, and getting put up in a nice hotel for a few days was amazing!

“I felt I performed not too bad. Malone is an amazing brown belt grappler and I did well to stop his attack on the ground.”

Your MMA: How much have you seen of Platts? Where will you beat him?

“I have watched Platts fight quite a lot actually, having been on the same show as him on three occasions, and watched a few of his videos. I would say he is my most experienced, well-rounded opponent to date but I’ll go into the fight as I always do, by being my positive and confident self.”

“I have a gameplan for Platts and also a plan B, C and D, but I don't want to give any of it away if that's ok [laughs].”

Your MMA: You're now third in the UK. How happy were you with your 2011?

“2011 was an amazing year for me. All the hard work I’ve put in over the last few years really paid off. I went 4-0 as a professional and also trained in Brazil with Brazilian Top Team for a few months. So aye, I had a no’ bad wee year!”

Your MMA: What can we expect in 2012? What are your ambitions?

“Moving on from such a great year, I'm going into 2012 more confident and hard working than ever before. I'm going to take all the hard fights that are offered to me, and just have a go at it.”

Your MMA: Do you have an eye on Neil Seery and Phil Harris, the two guys above you in the rankings? How do you think you'd do against those fighters?

“Seery and Harris are two very experienced guys and have a lot to offer. Seery looks like a tough boxer. In my opinion, a fight with him would be a great fight for people to watch.”

“Harris is obviously number one and the man to beat in the UK, and maybe Europe as well. So after On Top and SFC (where I'm fighting Declan Williams for the Flyweight title), I’ll see if I can get a fight with either Seery or Harris.”

Your MMA: The UFC have adopted a flyweight division. Should we expect to see you there in the future?

“When I started MMA a few years ago, I was told there was no chance that the UFC would have any guys under lightweight. Now there's a strong featherweight and bantamweight division, and soon the flyweight division is coming up. That’s happening just as I'm doing so well in my first year as a pro. Maybe it's fate telling me that if I stick in and keep up the positive attitude, I’ll get a chance to fight on the big show soon!”
