North East lightweight Andrew Fisher takes on one of his biggest tests to date this weekend when he meets Welshman Daniel “Denzil” Thomas at Supremacy FC 5 in Gateshead, for the promotion's lightweight title.

Fisher has faced off with top domestic fighters like Abdul Mohamed and the UFC’s Paul Sass so he is no stranger to tough fights, but he’ll be looking to make a dent on the UK rankings on Sunday against the well-travelled “Denzil”.

“Denzil has been around for years and is well deserving of his rank. It’s his experience that makes him dangerous,” Fisher told YourMMA.tv.

Thomas has taken on some of the biggest lightweight names in Europe, and often outside of his comfort zone. He’ll find himself against the crowd once again as he comes to Fisher’s back yard.

“Supremacy is my home show really and I get a good following up here, so I can’t wait to get back there again. Michael Surtees has always been really good to me and helped me a lot over the years.”

He’ll have no help when he’s in the cage though, but Fisher has been preparing hard with the top talent in the region, and he believes this sets him in good stead for the matchup.

When you can count the likes of UFC fighters Ross Pearson and Phil De Fries amongst your sparring partners, along with highly-ranked names like Curt Warburton, Colin Fletcher and Andy Ogle, you know you can be prepared for whatever your foe brings to you in the cage.

“Preparation has gone really well. I’m constantly grafting in the gym and my coaches and training partners push me and try to copy my opponent as much as possible, so up to now it’s been a really good training camp.

“I’ve just got the horrible part of making weight, and it’s especially hard today with me not being allowed pancakes,” laughed Fisher.

He’ll be hoping for just rewards for his commitment, discipline and hard training this weekend. He has his eyes on the prize, and Fisher hopes he can provide a good performance come Sunday night.

A win could open up some new avenues for him, but he can’t disregard the tough Welshman who will be aiming to stop him in his tracks.

“Hopefully if I perform well and get the win it could open some big things for me, but I'm not really looking past Sunday.”

He’s evaluated the strengths of Thomas, noting that he is a well-rounded foe, with his ground and pound something in particular to be aware of. However, Fisher has tactics in mind to deal with the threat.

In front of a partisan crowd, he hopes to deal with the challenges that are presented in the cage in order to raise his stock and take home the victory, setting himself up for a busy year.

“I just want to fight top opposition,” he confirmed. “I want to get the win on Sunday and then just get another fight as soon as possible after. I’m hoping to have four or five MMA fights this year and stay injury free.”

Fisher ended with:

“I'd like to say thanks to my coaches Sean Casey and Barry Gibson who constantly get the best out of me, all my training partners -- too many to name -- and all the TFT lads.”

Both men will be hungry for the win, so it makes for an exciting fight with more than just the title belt at stake at The Federation Brewery this weekend.
