Alan Belcher On The Title Shot, Bisping and Lombard

Belcher talks to us about his standing in the division with the Palhares win, and the other top contenders.

Alan Belcher dropped by Your MMA Radio to discuss some of the pressing topics on his agenda. Following a huge win over Rousimar Palhares at UFC On Fox: Diaz vs. Miller, he jumps right to the top of the middleweight division, and of course there are other contenders around that area also vying for a shot.

You can listen to the full interview here and on iTunes here, but below are some excerpts as he addresses his recent victory, Hector Lombard and Michael Bisping and where he stands in the division.

On the recent win over Palhares:

I felt that [I was the underdog]. It didn’t make a difference. I was really focused and dialled in. I can see why people would buy into the hype – he was on a streak, he did really well in Abu Dhabi and he was tearing people apart for a while; no-one wanted to fight him. People don’t know what I do in the gym in training, they don’t know the high-level training partners I have and the high-level black belts that I train with every day. The have no idea of what I can do, and I had the injury and came back and fought Jason Macdonald who a lot of people didn’t think was a really high-level opponent, but I didn’t let any of that hold me back, or even motivate me. I let the danger motivate me. I prepared the best I could and laid it on the line and did my best and it turned out in my favour.

On getting a title shot:

I don’t know, I’m definitely heading in the right direction. If you just keep winning you’ll get there. Right now it’s an issue of timing and what happens in the other fights. Certain things could happen that make it longer. If the other top guys win it makes it more confusing. If they lose and someone else steps in then I can step to the top. There are a lot of scenarios. Who knows, there’s a lot of cool stuff happening. As long as I don’t lose I know I’ll eventually get there.

I don’t know if it’s official, but we kind of talked about one more win and we’ll be in the right spot. I’m only going to take a fight against the top contender. With that being said, I don’t think I’m more than two fights away.

On Hector Lombard:

I’m going to be completely honest. Hector Lombard has a nice streak going and a good record, he’s the champion of another organisation that has some good fighters but they’re not the best in the world. I think the UFC are impressed by him in another sport that’s not MMA. I think it’s more of a hype type thing. I think they’re buying into the hype. Brian Stann is not the top contender; he’s not the guy that if you beat, you get a title shot.

On Michael Bisping:

He’s a very hard guy to beat, that’s why Chael had a problem. He’s good at controlling the fight and winning on points. I don’t know if that fight is more deserving than the other guys.

The reason why it seems like I talk about Bisping, is because people always ask me about that fight. What I always say is that he seems like a bit of an a-hole, but I don’t really know him. Seems like the fans would love it if I beat him. Personally I don’t really have an issue with him, but once I made some comments he came back and made some to make me not like him. Not that I dislike him, but he’s not my favourite person or anything. That would be a cool win.

Belcher holds a free webinar tonight at www.alanbelcherseminars.com - check that out for a dissection of his leglock defence tactics against Palhares.
