McVeigh To Meet Bernhard At Cage Warriors 40

Europe's number-one bantamweight Paul McVeigh (17-6) will meet Germany's Andreas Bernhard (7-1) in London.

Paul "Metabolic" McVeigh has sat atop of the European 135lbs scene for quite some time now, and the Dinky Ninja shows no signs of dropping off as he is scheduled to fight Warriors Fight Club's Andreas Bernhard at Cage Warriors 40 on February 26th.

McVeigh (17-6) may not have been as busy as he would have liked in 2010 after notching up just one bout, which was a submission win over the highly-ranked Lithuanian Artemij Sitenkov. However, that is all set to change as the Glasgow-based Irishman plans a busy first half of 2011, starting with the test against Bernhard.

Bernhard's record contains seven wins with just one blemish, when he was submitted by the well regarded featherweight Ben Boekee. Since the loss, he added back-to-back wins to his resume, and the talented Judoka will be aiming for a big scalp and a huge catapault up the rankings when he heads to London.

Cage Warriors matchmaker Ian Dean stressed that there have been complications, but he's glad to finally have McVeigh confirmed on the bill:

"We're excited to have Paul McVeigh back defending his title at Cage Warriors. Not only do I think that he's one of the UK's best pound-for-pound fighters, but he is also the best unsigned European bantamweight and we are proud to have him again on our show.

"The plan is to keep McVeigh busy during 2011, especially now that the UFC have a bantamweight division, but no-one is looking past Andreas Bernhard."

McVeigh is on the cusp of the big time with the UFC, now that sister company World Extreme Cagefighting have merged into the larger organisation. There are not many bouts left for him in Europe, and he has proven himself worthy of a shot with victories over the likes of Sitenkov, Musse Hasselvall and Marcelo Costa. With another win against a solid opponent in February, he wouldn't just be registering on White, Shelby and Zelaznik's radars, he'd be unmissable.

Dean finished by noting, "[Bernhard] has some good wins under his belt and is versatile enough to test the top guys in Europe at the weight. It should be another interesting European bout on a stacked card."

Part of the plan to keep "Metabolic" McVeigh active could include a further Cage Warriors slot on April 2nd. The promotion are expected to announce more big fights for their first event of the year soon, so stay tuned to YourMMA.tv, @YourMMA on Twitter and www.cagewarriors.com.
