MMA Supplements Review: MyProtein Whey Isolate Zest

Mike Leng tests out the new MyProtein Whey Isolate Zest, for those that want their protein fix a little fruitier.

I was recently lucky enough to get to test MyProtein's new Whey Isolate Zest. Now, I’m a big fan of MyProtein products to start with, and the fact that this is meant to be one of their fastest acting proteins, whilst coming in some great new flavours, only widened the grin on my face!

Firstly, let’s get the geeky stuff out of the way (admittedly my favourite part):

Nutritional Information Per 25g:

Energy: 85.6 Kcal
Energy: 363.5 kJ
Protein (as-is): 21.4g
Fat: 0.2g
Carbohydrates: 0.1g

The flavors sent to me were Blackcurrant, Apple and Raspberry and Orange and Passion Fruit.

This personally was a great time for me to get these on test. I’ve recently been dieting over the summer and I was looking for a fast acting protein I could use in either a pulsing method combined with intermittent fasting or something that could be consumed in the peri workout window to get the most amount of nutrients into my muscles when I needed them. If anyone is curious about this kind of stuff either ask your coach or leave a comment, and check out our interview with Shelby Starnes.

The first thing I noticed was the flavours. Normally I’m a strict chocolate man when it comes to my protein shakes, but the recent heat made me wish I had something a bit more like juice. I tried mixing unflavoured whey with Robinsons 'No Sugar' dilute juice and, after this experiment, I strongly recommend you don’t try this at home! So I was over the moon to find the flavours listed above land on my door step.

So on to how I used it. The first two pouches I used were during a fast following a high carb day, as I knew that the aminos in the whey would starve off catabolism and also that it would be fast acting enough to go straight where I needed it. I took the first shake (Apple and Raspberry) upon waking (7.30am). It mixed incredibly well (we all know what a ball ache it is to have a protein that doesn’t mix easily), and tasted great. Straight after I felt full, awake and ready for the day. The second shake (Blackcurrant) I had about 3pm and the results were the same as the first shake; great taste, easy mixability (that’s similar to drinkability in the Octagon) and left me feeling great.

A solid meal of protein and carbs before my workout left the final shake (Orange and Passion Fruit) to follow post workout. Again the shake mixed great but the taste made me feel very sickly after a workout. I have a similar response to dextrose so don’t let this put you off.

All in all, I thought that it was a great product and well worth the money if you are serious about what you put into your body (and you should be). It’s a fantastic tasting, fast acting protein and, to be honest, I really think it would be great in a peri workout protocol for MMA. I just wish I had a bit more to test the theory.

So if you want a high class protein with some great, unorthodox flavours then look no further.
